The World Wide Web is considered to be largest resource of up to the minute news and information. The internet is more than just a place for information though. It’s now a place to interact, conduct business, go shopping and more. Social Networking sites provide an avenue for people to meet other people, and even maintain old friendships when distance otherwise separates people. Never before has communication been so easy!

The networking site Classmates was one of the first social networking sites to come online. Since its inception in 1995, these types of websites have grown in popularity. Some social networking sites are adult only, while others are oriented to family, while still yet others target teens. You’d be hard pressed in fact, to find a teen that doesn’t belong to at least one of these sites. The primary reason for the boom in popularity of these sites is the ease of use. The easies a site is to navigate, the more popular it will be.

The social networking site MySpace has an estimated 50 million users. Most of these social networking sites are completely free, though there are some that do charges fees. The primary source of revenue however, is advertising fees. MySpace has reported that for fiscal year 2008, revenues topped 800 million dollars. Not bad for a place that offers you the chance to hook up with friends free!

Thousands are trying to capture a piece of the pie, as social networking sites begin to pop up all over the internet! You’ll have a very hard time not finding one that you want to join! Some of the social networking sites online today are even paying their users based on their activity on the site!
